What is Flood?

Flooding is an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods can happen during heavy rains, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts quickly, or when dams or levees break. Damaging flooding may happen with only a few inches of water, or it may cover a house to the rooftop. Floods can occur within minutes or over a long period, and may last days, weeks, or longer. Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters.

5 different types of flood

  • Flash floods.
  • Coastal floods.
  • Urban floods.
  • River floods.
  • Pluvial floods.

METHODS/DATA

Depending on the area, the solution method of flooding is different. So we decided to discuss two separate areas for this project which are urban and rural areas. You can check the solution on Research & Presentation page.

Where and when do floods occur?

Flooding occurs in every U.S. state and territory, and is a threat experienced anywhere in the world that receives rain. In the U.S. floods kill more people each year than tornadoes, hurricanes or lightning.

Motivation

As days go by, climate change has always been an issue for humanity. Fifty-thousand people died because of the flooding in the previous decade (Ritchie, 2020). While there are different types of climate changes, we thought that flooding is also one of the serious problems in the world that we all should be cautious and take care about. Our group decided to investigate the different methods on mitigating flooding issues by dividing into two categories: urban and rural areas. This will allow us to solve the problem more effectively since we will have to come up with different solutions according to the different characteristics of urban and rural settings. We are interested in  adapting different methods between urban and rural areas to minimize flood damage and fatality. This can be crucial research regarding our 21th century’s immense urbanization and climate changes that requires us to adjust and improve our method on how to face floods.
